Re: “Pro-Kyiv group is suspect in bombings,” (Front page story by Shane Harris, Souad Mekhennet, Greg Miller, and Michael Birnbaum, March 8, 2023)
To the Editor:
Speculations about responsibility for the September 26, 2022, explosions of the Nord Stream pipelines ignore the irrefutable evidence pointing the finger at the United States. On February 7, 2022, President Biden promised to destroy Nord Stream 2 if Russia invaded Ukraine: “We will bring an end to it. I promise we will be able to do it.”
The Biden Administration rejoiced over the pipeline explosions. Undersecretary of State Victoria Nuland crowed before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on January 27, 2023: “I am and I think that the administration is very gratified to know that Nord Stream 2 is now…a hunk of metal at the bottom of the sea.” Secretary of State Tony Blinken voiced similar gratification on October 23, 2022: “It’s a tremendous opportunity to once and for all remove the dependence of Russian energy and thus take away from Vladimir Putin the weaponization of energy as a means of advancing his imperial designs.”
Qui bono, who benefits, is the starting point in solving any mystery. The United States, by its own yardstick, has been the greatest beneficiary of the pipeline explosions.
