Updating the Gettysburg Address
Jan 27, 2016
Twelve score years ago our fathers and mothers brought forth on this continent to a new nation conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that we are endowed with unalienable rights.
Now we are engaged in a great presidential campaign, testing whether that nation can endure in a sea of ignorance, bigotry, fear, and sophomoric cravings for power, sex, fame, and creature comforts.
We have come to pay homage to Washington, John, Abagail, and John Quincy Adams, Jefferson, Madison, and Monroe. It is altogether fitting and proper that we do this.
They celebrated justice, not power or riches, as the final end of the state.
They developed a theory of man by searching for truth without ulterior motives more enlightening and powerful than Einstein's theory of relativity.
In matters of power, they placed no confidence in man; but arrested tyranny through checks and balances that pitted ambition against ambition.
They knew that the surest and shortest way to destroy the liberties of a democratic nation was through chronic wars not in self-defense.
They believed that the nation's glory was liberty, not domination and conquest.
They honored the march of the mind, not the march of the foot soldier in search of monsters to destroy.
We have come full circle from 1776.
We have a government of the stupid, by the stupid, for the stupid that mindlessly supports a Goliath-like military-industrial-terrorism complex that fights for the sake of fighting, tramples privacy, scorns due process, sneers at transparency, and salutes limitless executive power. On this score, there's not a dime's worth of difference between the Democrats and Republicans.
Though the effort will be futile, we shall challenge the descent of the nation into the darkness, and cast a bright light into the heavens to outshine the stars like daylight doth a lamp.
