Bruce, Israel's fight is not for power but to destroy an evil that has been lurking in its midst for years. Hamas's plans are now well known. Unfortunately, the Israelis have been whistling past the graveyard since 2005, now they have no choice but to destroy Hamas.
What is your solution, if not destruction of Hamas? A two-state solution? Ceasefire? I do understand your point regarding that there is no end in sight, and that Israel is being naive with regards to the outcome, but again what is the solution?
